Spruce Meadows, the sprawling equestrian facility in the south side of Calgary, has made the unprecedented decision to cancel its Summer Series which includes four events.

“As the world moves to contain the COVID-19 virus, we are witnessing a remarkable collaboration of nations, provinces, communities, public health and medical professionals and governments around the globe working together to try to contain, test and treat COVID-19,” said Linda Southern-Heathcott, President & CEO, Spruce Meadows, in a statement.

“What is even more impressive is the resilience of the people – whether it is singing on the balcony, offering to shop for the house-bound, home concerts of our artists, home workouts, or even just making that friendly call to see how someone is. It is truly remarkable how in these times of social distancing the simplest act of reaching out can be so impactful.

“These are such trying times and truly without precedent.  It is with enormous regret that the Spruce Meadows Management team, with full respect and compliance with the recent World Health Organization, Canadian Federal and Provincial government guidelines, has made the difficult, but prudent decision, effective March 23, 2020 to officially cancel the Spruce Meadows Summer Series, including the ‘National’ June 4-7, the ‘Continental’ June 11-14, the ‘Pan American’ June 25 – 28 and the ‘North American’ July 1 – 5.  The health and well-being of our sponsors and their employees, our competitors, officials, volunteers, fans, the media, Spruce Meadows’ staff and the community at large is of paramount importance to us.”

The duration of this unprecedented pandemic is unpredictable, she said.

No mention was made of the Masters international tournament which takes place in September.
