Calgary-based Edo Japan has expanded east, opening its first street-front location in Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

“We are looking forward to seeing Edo Japan’s growth into eastern markets with the opening of Ontario’s inaugural street-front location,” said David Minnett, president and CEO of Edo Japan, in a statement.

“We have experienced ongoing success across the diverse Canadian quick-service landscape, bringing Canadians together with the freshest, highest-quality Japanese-inspired cuisine. It is our tradition to put our customers first and pay keen attention to each meal served.

“Introducing an Edo Japan street-front location to the Ontario market is a highly-anticipated undertaking that also opens doors to more franchising opportunities. Having seen ongoing success in Western Canada, we intend to continue this positive growth for decades to come.”

The quick-service restaurant with locations across Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba was founded in Calgary in 1979.

The company said it has a robust expansion model for Eastern Canada.

The first street-front Ontario restaurant will be operated by entrepreneurs Azaan Visram and Hussain Shivji, who are from Calgary.

“Growing up, Edo Japan was a staple for me,” says Visram. “Naturally, it made sense to transform my personal liking for the brand into a business capacity. As someone who knows the brand well, I believe Edo Japan is a perfect fit for the Ontario market and I’m looking forward to the opportunity ahead.”

Edo Japan has 136 locations across Canada, serving more than nine million meals annually.
