Calgary’s Business: What’s your sense of how the economy is performing in Calgary and Alberta?

Brownlee: Overall, positive. There are new startups and opportunities popping up every month. There’s cautious optimism on the street because the big investors left Calgary and Alberta a few years ago; however, we live in a very resilient province and see signs of business picking up.

CB:What about employment?

Brownlee: We see small improvements every week. Unfortunately, there are still many people out of work and they’re hurting.

Part-time and contract jobs are much more popular now, and that’s always the first sign of a slow recovery.

CB: Has Calgary lost a lot of executive talent in the past few years because of the struggling economy?

Brownlee: Absolutely. Many have left Calgary entirely, some pivoted into other industries or businesses, and some are consulting globally.

CB: What exactly do you and your company do?

Brownlee: We connect people globally. Our revenue streams include headhunting, introduction facilitation, business development support, and teaching people how to get the job of their dreams.

CB: Is it tougher for companies today to find the right fit for them at the executive level or is there more choice?

Brownlee: There are more candidates to choose from. However, the effort to find the right fit is always the same. That’s where we come in to serve and support.
