Solar rebates available on a first-come, first-served basis

Edmontonians now have the opportunity to receive rebates for installing solar panels on their rooftops through the Change for Climate Solar Program. With access to $1.96 million in new funding, residents can generate local renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The funding announcement marks a total of $6 million invested in the Solar Rebate Program since 2019, with 1,211 residents having already participated in the initiative.

“City Council has allocated $27 million to climate action in the 2023-2026 budget. It is crucial that we do everything we can to combat climate change and encourage residents to engage in climate change mitigation,” stated Mayor Amajeet Sohi. “Programs like the Solar Rebate bring us closer to our net-zero targets and also play a significant role in boosting the economy by catalyzing the net-zero renovation industry, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth for the city.”

Ward Councillor and Energy Transition and Climate Resilience Committee advisor Michael Janz added, “It is imperative that we take every possible step to combat climate change and encourage citizens to participate in climate change mitigation when they can. We heard the strong support for the Solar Program during budget discussions last fall, and we are responding to the needs of our residents.”

The Solar Rebate Program will remain in effect until funds are fully committed, with rebates available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program will eventually be replaced by the comprehensive Edmonton Clean Energy Improvement Program (E-CEIP), scheduled to launch in 2024.

The E-CEIP will transition from a pilot initiative, launched in spring 2022, to a fully funded program. It will enable homeowners and building owners to undertake energy retrofits through low-interest rate loans repaid via their property taxes over a term of up to 20 years.

Edmontonians are also encouraged to participate in the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, a federal program offering grants of up to $5,000 and interest-free loans of up to $40,000 for home energy retrofits and installing renewable energy systems.
