It was a tough year in 2019 in Alberta for investment in building construction.

Statistics Canada reported Monday that investment in both residential construction and non-residential construction was down compared to 2018.

The federal agency said investment in residential construction in Alberta fell by 15.3 per cent year-over-year to $11.7 billion while investment in non-residential construction in the province declined by 4.3 per cent to $8.9 billion.

Across Canada, investment in residential construction rose by 2.3 per cent to $123.9 billion while investment in non-residential construction was up six per cent to $57.9 billion.

For the month of December, Alberta experienced a 3.2 per cent month-over-month increase in investment in residential construction to $1.1 billion but investment in non-residential construction fell by 1.2 per cent to $695.5 million.

Nationally, StatsCan said investment in residential construction rose by 0.3 per cent month-over-month to $10.6 billion and investment in non-residential construction increased by 0.8 per cent to $5 billion.
