Calgary Economic Development has cancelled it upcoming Report to the Community event due to the fears of coronavirus.

In a news release on Friday, the organization said “the health and safety of our community is of paramount importance to us, as we know it is for you.”

“After receiving guidance from the City of Calgary, Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer and our Board of Directors around the potential spread Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have cancelled Report to the Community, which was scheduled for March 31st.

“The decision wasn’t made lightly, but with more than 800 people expected to attend from businesses, education and government, we determined cancelling was the prudent thing to do.”

The organization said it will keep people informed about all future Calgary Economic Development events and it will be sharing its 2019 results later this spring.

“Our work on behalf of Calgarians continues. For the well-being of our community, we have cancelled all staff travel. Our office will be closed effective Monday, March 16, and our people will work from home. We are optimistic this will help ensure everyone’s safety and a more rapid ‘flattening of the curve’ from the spread of the virus,” stated the organization.
