The hiring climate for the second quarter of this year is being described as “conservative” in Calgary and “flat” in Edmonton, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey which was released on Tuesday.

“Survey data reveals that 10 per cent of employers (in Calgary) plan to hire for the upcoming quarter, while three per cent anticipate cutbacks,” said Randy Upright, CEO of Manpower’s Alberta Region. “The remaining 87 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter.

“With seasonal variations removed from the data, Calgary’s second quarter Net Employment Outlook of plus seven per cent is a six-percentage point increase when compared to the previous quarterly Outlook. It is also a one-percentage point increase from the Outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a modest hiring pace for the upcoming months.”

In Edmonton, the survey found that 14 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter, while nine per cent anticipate cutbacks. The remaining 77 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter.

“With seasonal variations removed from the data, Edmonton’s second quarter Net Employment Outlook of plus two per cent is a one percentage point decrease when compared to the previous quarterly Outlook,” said Upright. “It is also a seven percentage point decrease from the Outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a stagnant hiring pace for the upcoming months.”
